 | | I claim no expertise on the writings of the early church fathers. I am a pastor who is wanting to understand our story better and who is wanting to avoid what Thomas Oden has called "modern chauvinism" or "neophilia", the idea that the "new" is inherently better than the "old."
I suspect the opposite to be the case. Regardless, in this series I will be making summary comments on the writings of the fathers as I am able and as time permits. All of these writings are available online, though I'm using the old American edition that Henrickson Publishers has (thankfully) offered the public in a fairly inexpensive format. I have no doubt that there have been profound improvements in these texts and the studies surrounding them and that much light has been shed on them since the appearance of the edition I'm using. As such, I'm grateful for any clarifications that those who know better can offer. My intent is to read these texts with a (1) Christian, (2) pastoral, and (3) grateful eye, thanking God for His goodness in preserving these ancient and crucial records. |
