1.  It was hot.

2.  David Platt's sermon was unbelievable and, for the second year in a row, was shown to First Baptist Dawson last Sunday night.

3.  It was hot.

4.  How did we go from a projected 17,000 messengers to just over 10,000?  Does this reflect the fact that the whole GCR discussion/debate lacked the kind of populist traction that many thought it would have?

5.  It was hot.

6.  The free books given out at the Founder's breakfast this year were really very nice.

7.  It was hot.

8.  The GCR discussion was interesting, if overly-long, but was marred by one of the more frustrating parliamentary breakdowns I've ever witnessed at an SBC gathering.

9.  It was hot.

10.  I voted for the GCR, but was nontheless a bit put-off by the way in which the issue was woven into virtually every sermon during the pastor's conference.

11.  It was hot.

12.  I voted for the GCR, but I felt that the (overkill?) beating of the GCR drum came dangerously close to equating the GCR with the Great Commission itself.

13.  It was hot.

14.  Ravi Zacharias is a true servant of God and I was very moved by his message.

15.  It was hot.

16.  This site isn't about muckraking, and I do so try to stay above the fray.  There are, for instance, more than a few happenings in the SBC world that I simply don't comment on.  But I will say this:  a few of the final vestiges of the first generation Conservative Resurgence old-guard really could muster a little more grace as they exit the scene and give way to a second generation that likely believes in the Conservative Resurgence no less than they do but see it perhaps with a greater sense of clarity regarding its strengths and weaknesses.

17.  It was hot.

18.  $11 to park...each and every time you parked.  As in, not $11 for a day, but $11 each and every time.

19.  It was hot.

20.  I was proud to have seven members of First Baptist Dawson attend the Convention!  Way to go guys!

21.  It was hot.

22.  It's great to see old friends at the Convention, if only in brief moments of passing.

23.  It was hot.

24.  Is it absolutely necessary for the stars and luminaries of the Convention to walk in with a gaggle of disciples waddling behind them?  Is this what "may you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi" means? ;-)

25.  I saw this painted on a wall next to a restaurant:

26.  It was hot.

27.  So what is going to happen now that the GCR has passed?  One wonders...

28.  It was hot.

29.  I spent a couple of days in Disney after the Convention.  It was a lot of fun but...

30.  It was hot.

31.  For the first time in recent memory, nobody was selling those roasted, sugary, cinammon pecans and cashews in the Convention hall!  I almost brought a resolution to the floor about it, but decided not too after observing the parliamentary gaffe during the GCR debate.  But then, in Disney's Animal Kingdom, what do I smell in Africa near the African safari ride?  No, not that...yeah, that's right:  roasted, sugary, cinammon pecans and cashews!  Hurrah!  My brother David and I partook and rejoiced.

32.  It was hot.

33.  How does IX Marks manage to give away that many free books?  That's amazing and I was glad to get a copy of Greg Gilbert's What is the Gospel?

34.  It was hot.

Well, all told, it was a great Convention, and a great week.

That's it.

Pax vobiscum.

Re: Random and Idiosyncratic Reflections on Last Week in Orlando

I am off to Methodist Conference tomorrow - oddly enough, the prediction (for these British at least) it will be hot!

I hope you guys have a great conference! Don't eat as much at your conference as I did at our convention! Ha!

Re: Random and Idiosyncratic Reflections on Last Week in Orlando

Some folks may think I'm crazy, but I walked away from the convention feeling good about being a Southern Baptist. Sure, we have our "issues" from time to time, but I like the direction we're trying to take. For me, it was a positive experience.

Disney was great too.

And yes, it was hot!

Those pecans were out of this world. Loved 'em!

Of course, I did not get to eat any of those pecans since they did not serve them in First Aid. Just saying.....

Memaw, that was truly one of the scarier things I've ever seen! How about not doing that again, ok? :-)

However, it was so momentous it may garner you your very own blogpost in the near future.

Re: Random and Idiosyncratic Reflections on Last Week in Orlando

I loved the pres of the pastors conference family. I don't remember his name but his son's was John Michael and they call him JM. He was the one who said (after being adopted), " I will be a good son for you." That moment I will never forget. I want to be a good daughter for Jesus.

Many verses have to come to my mind since that adventure.......Thanks for the framed reminder. That is now a family heirloom.

Amy,

Truly awesome. I'm glad you dudes went! That was a lot of fun! I'm proud that young folks from FBC Dawson go and participate. Next year - say it with me - "P-h-o-e-n-i-x!"
