  • I don't Twitter.  Never have.  I don't knock those who do.  It's neither here nor there to me.  But I have been reading the tweets of some involved in Convention life in one way or another, and I must say that, on the whole, the entire enterprise seems to be completely counterproductive to genuine conversation.
  • I was thrilled to see patristics addressed at the 2010 Together for the Gospel gathering in Louisville.  (I did not attend...just listened to the audio.)  Ligon Duncan's "Did The Father's Know The Gospel?" (mp3 link) was very interesting, though there were some pretty big generalizations in it.
  • Timothy George's "How Old are the Baptists?" is as succint a summary of Baptist history as you'll find anywhere.  Very helpful.  Vintage George. (And I note that the article is available in a booklet form from The Alabama Baptist.)
  • This was on my mp3 player this morning while I rode my stationary bike.  It effects me everytime I hear it.  Do you have any "most peculiar people" in your life?

  • There's real wisdom in C.J. Mahaney's sermon, "Ordinary Pastors" (mp3 link).   I found this message profoundly encouraging and helpful.  I suspect most pastors will resonate with what he's saying.
  • Next month we will be attending the Southern Baptist Convention in Orlando.  I was there ten years ago when the Convention voted to boycott Disney.  I voted against the boycott and went to the Disney that day with a clean conscience.  (I thought, and think, the boycott was absurd.)  Anyway, the vast majority of folks voted for the boycott, of course.  So imagine my surprise to pull up to the Disney parking lot and see a veritable sea of Baptist church vans.  Makes you wonder!
  • So they say pre-registration for this year's Convention is double what it was last year.  They are expecting around 17,000 messengers.  In my opinion it's because of the GCR vote.  My brother David agrees but adds that Disney World is playing a part in this as well.  He's probably right to some extent...though I'd wager more Baptists drive down for what they think will be a fight (please, Lord, make it not so!) than for Disney.  Who knows?
  • Guess what movie came out on DVD today?

That's right.  The movie based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Cormac McCarthy...which for some utterly bizarre reason never showed up in movie theaters south of Atlanta last Fall.  Mrs. Richardson and I will be watching it tonight, God willing and the creek don't rise.

Re: Random Thoughts (and a few humble offerings)

I like your "Random Thoughts." Very interesting stuff!

Can't wait to watch "The Road" myself. Thanks to you and dad, I read the book, and really enjoyed it. One of the best novels I've ever read.

As for the convention, you may be right, Wym. Maybe some Baptists do enjoy a fight more than Mickey Mouse. Personally, I'm excited about the convention. I look forward to good preaching, seeing family and friends, and (hopefully!!) taking a good step forward in the Southern Baptist quest to fulfill the Great Commission.

And, yes, I will say unashamedly that I'm looking forward to visiting Disney World after the convention is all over too. Space Mountain awaits you and me, Wym!

As always, I enjoyed visiting your blog. Well done.

Re: Random Thoughts (and a few humble offerings)

Dave,

Space Mtn does indeed wait for us...AFTER the Convention, of course. :-) That Mt. Everest ride at Animal Kingdom is moving on up there in terms of my list of truly great rides.

We shall conquer them all.
