The Baptist Theology website has posted a new White Paper from Dr. Garrett. It initially appeared in the Associated Baptist Press as a position paper contrasting with Dr. Curtis Freeman's paper in favor of open membership.
Perhaps I'll share some personal thoughts on the issue itself later on, but for now I just wanted to draw attention to Dr. Garrett's (and Dr. Freeman's) article.
By the way, Dr. Garrett has entered into theological and ecclesial debate before, most notably with E. Glenn Hinson on the question "Are Southern Baptists Evangelicals?"

Re: "Should Churches Adopt Open Membership": A New White Paper by Dr. James Leo Garrett, Jr.
Nice read Wym! Dr. Garrett was clear and concise and I thought he presented a good case. I certainly agree that believer's baptism by immersion is a Baptist distinctive and personally believe we should hold fast to it. My concern is one Dr. Garrett addressed (Landmarkism) and one I believe the SBC struggles with - at least the IMB does. That is only accepting a believer's baptism in a church that affirms eternal security. With this policy, they have slipped back to the Landmark days and I think it is problematic.

Michael,
Great to hear from you, dude! Keep them in line over there in Americus! :-)
I share your concern about (a) keeping believer's baptism as a Baptist distinctive and (b) what appears to be a neo-Landmarkist movement in the Convention.
It's time to eat at The Roman Oven again, no?
