Disney World is like Heaven in that there are people from all nationalities, tribes, and tongues gathered in one place...and like Hell in that there is massive linguistic confusion among the sweating masses of irritated humanity that teem through the park.  (When my daughter went up and offered a family our Fast Passes to "Tower of Terror" because we had to leave, they stared at her as if she was an alien.  As it turns out, they spoke no English.)

Disney World is like Heaven in that many people yearn to enter...and like Hell in that many people are clawing to get out. (The former happens generally in the morning and the latter generally in the evening.  The difference in the dispositions of those in both instances is marked.)

Disney World is like Heaven in that the food is plentiful, yummy, and easily accessible...and like Hell in that you realize afterwards that you paid WAY too big a price for it. (Three hamburgers costs $31?  Really?!)

Disney World is like Heaven in that it presents the patrons of the park with an idyllic, beautiful, trouble-free, dreamy world of ease and happiness...and like Hell in that you know it's all plastic and a good bit of it is designed to take everything you have.

Disney World is like Heaven in that children skip and laugh and giggle along the streets...and like Hell in that children scream and cry and pitch fits and fight along the streets. (Again, these occurrences usually happen in the morning ((laughter)) then at night ((crying)).)

Disney World is like Heaven in that it has been designed for your joy...and like Hell in that it has been designed to steal almost everything you own and leave you broken and empty.

Disney World is like Heaven in that people crowd around to see the attractions of the place...and like Hell in that you have to wait in line 80 minutes for 2-minutes-worth of said attractions.

Disney World is like Heaven in that the sun is always shining there...and like Hell in that the sun is shining at blistering, ruthless, horrible temperatures of torture.

Disney World is like Heaven in that choirs are singing happy songs...and like Hell in that the choirs are made up of lilliputian plastic robots that sing "It's A Small World After All" over and over and over and over and over and over while you're stuck on a boat on the river Styx.

Disney World is like Heaven in that it's a place where dreams come true...and like Hell in that some of those dreams are overpriced, mechanized, plastic, consumeristic nightmares of immeasrable agony.

Disney World is like Heaven in that my wife and daughter are happy there.  (Nah, no "Hell" part on this one.  That's just Heaven.)

So, anyway, just thinking aloud about Disney.  All in all, the good outways the bad and the fun times and laughs are more than worth it...even for a $10 hamburger.

And finally, a musical offering for your perusal.  Yes, I know it's from Disney Land in CA (enjoy it, Eugene!), but it was the best I could find.

Re: How Disney World Is Like Heaven...And Hell

Curses to anyone who says anything negative about Disney World!

Ok, ok. Now that I've gotten that out of my system, I'd have to say that you're right. It is truly a wonderful place. Heck, my bride and I honeymooned there. But the skyrocketing expenses and suffocating crowds are a bit much.

Over Spring Break, our family was at Downtown Disney, eating lunch at Planet Hollywood. Our server told us that the best times of the year to come to Disney World are January and September. He said it is not nearly as crowded then, because everyone has spent all their money after Christmas and summer vacation. That made perfect sense to me.

Oh well, thanks for a good post, Wym. I enjoyed reading it.

My greatest regret, Dave, is that we're too old and big to ride the Dumbo ride! ;-)

Pastor Wyman,

It could be added, "Disney World is like Hell in that there are continually disheveled crowds of screaming people and waves of incessant noise."
You should submit this to the people who print out those little yellow newsletters that have five or six humorous pieces on each side of the paper, or to some sort of place that publishes humor...I'm pretty sure this would make it. =) Quite funny!

I recall going to Disney World several years ago (probably back around 2002 or 2003). It was a lot of fun, though incidentally, my most prominent memories are 1) the pizza joint we ate at the night before actually going to Disney World, and 2) buying Lewis' "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" the afternoon we drove up and finishing it before going to bed.
