Re: The Canadian Tenors
W,
Outstanding!
Three questions: 1) What is this song about? (e.g.: 'she tied you to a kitchen chair, she broke your throat, she cut your hair...') 2) Why do Canadiens like this song so much? k.d. lang sang it at the Vancouver opening ceremonies. 3) Can they play hockey?

Re: The Canadian Tenors
L,
I first heard it on the movie Shrek! (Not this version.) Well, it's about David but I think they threw in a dose of Samson on that one. Canadians like it because Leonard Cohen, who wrote it, was Canadian. It's a cool song, but I don't really understand it. :-)

Re: The Canadian Tenors
Fie upon these Canadians! Jeff Buckley's rendition of this song will always, now and forever, be THE rendition. www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8AWFf7EAc4

Re: The Canadian Tenors
Eugene,
A nice rendition. Many thanks.
I actually saw Justin Timberlake and some other cat perform this on the Haiti telethon that was on TV. It was surprisingly good. Here 'tis: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfYmMt92Otg

Re: The Canadian Tenors
Eugene and W,
Yes, but can they play hockey?
Priorities, gentlemen.
Thanks, L

Re: The Canadian Tenors
W,
Now I'm laughing. 'She tied you to her kitchen chair, she broke your THRONE . . .' not throat. Doesn't make much more sense, but not quite so violent.
Like hockey.
Yours, L (still laughing)

Re: The Canadian Tenors
Lee,
They ALL look like pretty boys to me, so likely no hockey. Can you imagine one of those Canadian Tenors' getting a tooth knocked out?
I missed that at first! Ha! Yeah, "Broke your throne..." Man, it's violent out there in Santa Fe! Cormac McCarthy and now you!

Re: The Canadian Tenors
Wyman,
I still like Buckley's version the best. The song's melancholy view of erotic/romantic love as a shadowy and somewhat unsatisfying substitute for the love of God takes on a special poignancy when Buckley sings it, given his own distrustful and sometimes angry view of traditional spirituality.

Re: The Canadian Tenors
I would have to say Lincoln Brewster has a great version of this song, although slightly revised for a Christian audience (I wouldn't see KD Lang singing this) www.last.fm/music/Lincoln+Brewster/_/Another+Hallelujah. He grew up in Alaska, so he's not quite Canadian but as close as you can get. Wym, we were in Dawson this weekend and missed you. I was sad, but then we saw Roni so that made me feel a little better.
