Michael Spencer, iMonk, has been a friend for some years now.  He encouraged me when I first started blogging some years back.  I enjoyed my time as a fellow at The Boar's Head Tavern (before bowing out), and I currently enjoy being one of "The Liturgical Gangstas" and getting to answer the questions that Michael pitches our way.  His internetmonk blog is always a fascinating, if eclectic, read, whether you agree with all of his views or not.  But Michael is going through a very difficult time right now, as Ryan explains at The Boar's Head Tavern...

Yesterday, a number of Dawson citizens spent a good bit of time searching for an elderly lady, Miss Clora, who had wandered out of her home the night before. (I was not part of the search party.)  Her body was found yesterday afternoon.

I never knew her and I do not think I ever met her.  She was a stranger to me, and I to her, much, I'm sure, to my loss!  But I've been thinking about her death.

I'm going to ask for pity here:  I am no poet and I know very little about poetry other than that I like to read poems I like.  But I've written a poem for Miss Clora that I thought I might share here.  It's simply my effort to honor the passing of a lady who, by all accounts, was a wonderful person.

I have had the great privilege recently of getting to know Rev. Al McCary of Manifesting the Kingdom Ministries, a church here in Dawson, GA.  Brother McCary hosted a prayer breakfast this morning and had asked if I would share some words on the theme, "Coming Together As Great Leaders of God."

It was a wonderful time of fellowship and I am looking forward to getting to know this brother in Christ better, along with the other ministers who were at the breakfast.

Dawson is probably not unlike most other towns in that the ministers often do not get together for unified fellowship, proclamation, and witness as we should.  Furthermore, I believe it is safe to say that many Christians in Dawson bemoan the unfortunate division of the races in our town.  It is not that there is no cooperation, just that there isn't enough.  I believe, and I think all of the participants this morning believe, that that needs to change and that it can change through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Here is the audio of my remarks.  The quality isn't great, but I think it's passable.

Abortion is, hands down, the most emotionally-charged and contentious issue in the public square today, and semantics is at the very heart of the debate.  The intent of the semantics game is usually to obscure or obfuscate.  I was reminded of this fact this morning when I read an article entitled "Boxer compares denying women abortion coverage to denying men Viagra."

It's an astounding headline, and one that reveals a great deal.

When I was a kid I was taught to say "Go Cocks!" and "Boo Tigers!"  I've held on to both of those ideas for 35 years now.  It has not been easy.  The Clemson Tigers have dominated the rivalry for the 107 years that it has been played, but the Gamecocks put together one of their more impressive victories over the Tigers on Saturday when they defeated them 34-17 in Columbia.

Those of you who appreciate a good college football rivalry will know that people take these things waaaaaaaaaay too seriously (myself included), but that, handled rightly, these rivalries can be a lot of fun.  So, on that note, just a few thoughts and images from Saturday.
