I'm an unlikely candidate to write a letter defending limited atonement.  I would describe my position on the issue as a bit "schizophrenic" really:  sometimes agreeing, sometimes not.  (And, no, that is not an invitation for anybody to challenge me on the issue right now...from either side.  I'm not interested at the moment.)

What I am certain of, though, is that shoddy thinking and a poor grasp of our history is inexcusable and ought to be challenged, especially when it's paraded in the state Baptist newspaper.

So when a pastor writes this to The Christian Index:

Call heresy heresy, no matter the speaker
By George Owens, pastor, First Baptist Church, Ellenwood

This letter is to give a hearty “amen” to Fred Gilder for his letter in The Index asking why there are so many Calvinists in SBC seminaries. We Southern Baptist leaders are quick to condemn doctrinal impurity when it comes from outside our camp. If a Catholic priest, Jehovah’s Witness leader, or Muslim cleric said that the blood of Jesus was not shed for all of mankind we would be shouting “heresy” from the roof-tops. Why then are we strangely quiet when it comes from those that carry the mantle “Baptist” in their name?

Heresy is heresy and it should matter not who the source is. Maybe that is why our church membership, baptisms, and world-wide effectiveness are on the decline. We need to stand for love and unity but not at the expense of doctrinal purity. Agape!

Then I'm going to write this...

My friend Darrell Paulk informed me about about a recent Alabama Baptist article listing the members of the GCR taskforce and some basic information about each of their churches.

I voted for the GCR.  I optimistically await their report and pray it is helpful, useful, and will have a positive impact on the life of the Convention.

I offer the following without further comment except that I have highlighted the CP giving for each church.

Dr. Steve Harmon teaches theology at the Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL.  I've had the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Harmon a bit through some correspondence we've had around the publication of his book, Towards Baptist Catholicity.  I interviewed him about that work here.  He has a new website called Ecclesial Theology.

I like Dr. Harmon and I was thrilled when Beeson hired him.  He's definitely more of a "moderate" Baptist than me, and there are times I feel like an old time fundie when I read him!  :-)  But overall I really appreciate his work and think he's saying some very important things and, as a rule, when Dr. Harmon writes something I try to read it.

He's posted a link to an interesting and helpful article he's written entitled, "Learning To Pray."  Check it out!

This is great.  One of the guys at The Boar's Head posted a link to Bobby McFerrin (yes, he of "Don't Worry, Be Happy" fame) demonstrating "the power of the pentatonic scale" at the World Science Festival.

Very cool and somehow moving as well.  (Shades of Romans 1, somehow.)
