My friend Scott Kerlin once told me that I have very emotive tastes in music for a dude. He didn't put it quite like that (mainly because Scott doesn't know what the word emotive means), but I do think he's probably right. Yep, come to think of it, I'll admit as much with no shame: I do treasure music that has great emotive force, that moves the soul as it were; music that is shot through with pathos, hinting at transcendence with a bit of melancholy to boot.
I thought of that a couple of weeks ago when I found myself mesmerized during an episode of The Prairie Home Companion at the music of a group I'd never heard of before: The Wailin' Jennys.
In addition to having one of the cooler group names I've ever heard, these girls have absolutely beautiful voices. I know next to nothing about them, but I know that I loved the song I heard on the radio that night, and I also love these songs.
Check this out.
